Geography

Geography as an isolated subject area may not be as relevant for the student as geography in context to science and history. When studying botany, for instance, in Grade 5, local plants may be examined in relation to the local geography. Then when plants are examined in other areas, one can see the relationship between the land and the plants. Likewise, when studying zoology in Grade 4, geography and landscape will have a more significant impact when presented in relation to the animals being studied.

History is a wonderful opportunity to include geography. In fact, geography and history should be inseparable. The exception, is when children are too young to understand the abstract concept of a map in relation to the subject area being studied. However, landscapes and names may be included in those discussions.

Map making holds a significant place starting in Grade 5. Orienting oneself within the environment, begins when students first start school. But, orienting a place outside of oneself requires a cognitive ability and development that is better suited for middle school.

Geography, topography and geology pair well together. Therefore, the mineralogy block in Grade 6 is another opportunity to not only learn about geography, but also about landforms and how the history of the planet affects not only the rocks and minerals of a place but also the resulting flora and fauna.
